Discharge of paru into Waiwhetū Stream

Aug 14, 2024, 4:05 PM

Wellington Water crews are currently managing a wastewater overflow in Oruamatoro (Days Bay), Eastbourne, which began on Saturday afternoon 10 August 2024.

To carry out the repairs, the main wastewater outfall pipeline, which typically discharges treated wastewater at Parangarahu (Pencarrow Heads) near Lake Kōhanga Piripiri, has been temporarily shut off.

This means 'treated' wastewater is now being discharged into the Waiwhetū Stream instead of the South Coast. As of 8 AM Sunday, 625 litre's per second of wastewater—almost 22 Olympic pools a day—will flow into Waiwhetu stream, which then enters Te Awa Kairangi and eventually our Harbour until the repair is made.
